ALASKA  PILOT CAR REGULATIONS
When Permit is Needed
Distance to be traveled, route, and obstructions on route taken into consideration when determining
need for permit.

Times of Movement
½ hour before daylight until ½ hour after sunset; Monday through Saturday noon. 
Sunday travel included for vehicles less than 10’ wide, 16’ high, 85’ long with legal overhang. 
Oversizes vehicles may travel during hours of darkness with special lighting and taping. 
No travel on weekends of New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th ,Labor Day, Thanksgiving,
Christmas 
No travel in urban areas from 7-8am and 4:30-6pm.
School year restrictions for the Sterling Highway, Kenai Spur and Kalifornski Beach Rd. from 6:45-
9am and from 2:15-4:30pm for loads greater than 14’ wide.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
Cannot exceed unladen weight of 10,000 lbs.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator
Driver must be equipped with:
Bright orange jacket or vest
“Slow/Stop paddle w/ black letters; orange background
Red or fluorescent hand flag
