Yukon 

Truck signs and flags 

Width: over 8 feet 6 inches(2.6m) require red flags and lights on the extremities of the load. Loads over 10 feet(3.05m) wide shall have in addition to the above, over dimensional signs at the front and rear of the hauling unit and load. Loads over 10 feet 6 inches(3.2m) wide require one or more 360 degree amber warning lights mounted on the top of the vehicle and turned on while traveling. 

Height: over 13 feet 9 inches(4.2m) high must clear all overhead wires or structures. If the load is of a height that wires must be moved, then the hauling unit must have one or more 360 degree amber warning lights mounted on top of the vehicle. Red flags are required by day and clearance lights by nights on the extremities of the load, as well as dimensional signs at the front and rear of the hauling unit and load. 

Length: for loads exceeding 82 feet(25m)/85 feet(26m) for b-trains; red flags are required by day and clearance lights by night on the extremities of the load. For loads exceeding 90 feet(27.5m), the hauling unit must have in addition to the above, dimensional signs at the front and rear of the hauling unit and load. Also the hauling vehicle shall have one or more 360 degree amber warning lights mounted on top of the vehicle turned on while traveling. 

Overhang: when there is overhangs as follows: to the front of the load more than 9 feet 10 inches(3m) beyond the kingpin or more than 21 feet 8 inches(6.6m) beyond the vehicle turn center; or the rear projection is more than 21 feet 4 inches(6.5m) from the center of the rear axle then the following is required: the hauling unit must have one or more 360 degree amber warning lights mounted on top of the vehicle and turned on when traveling. Red flags are required by day and clearance lights by night on the extremities of the load, and must have in addition to the above dimensional signs at the front and rear of the hauling unit and load. 

 

When escorts required 

Width: loads over 10 feet 6 inches(3.2m) require a lead pilot vehicle. Loads over 12 feet 6 inches(3.8m) require one pilot vehicle and one trail vehicle. Loads over 16 feet(4.88m) may require addition to pilot vehicles, a yukon government carrier compliance vehicle to accompany the load. 

Height: where the height is such that wires have to be moved, one lead pilot vehicle is required in front of the load. 

Length: loads over 90 feet(27.5m) require one trail vehicle. Loads exceeding 188 feet 1 inch(36m) require one pilot vehicle and one trail vehicle. 

Overhang: to the front of the load more than 9 feet 10 inches(3m) beyond the kingpin or more than 21 feet 8 inches(6.6m) beyond the vehicle turn center; or the rear projection is more than 21 feet 4 inches (6.5)from the center of the rear axle – one pilot is required in front of the load. 

 

Special requirements 

Width: loads exceeding 16 feet(4.88m) must have in addition to basic requirements and escorts, may be required to be accompanied by a yukon government carrier compliance vehicle. 

Length: where a load exceeds 118 feet(36m) it may be required to be accompanied by a manned steering trailer – to be equipped with windshield, windshield wipers and washer, heater and defrost system and two-way radio communication. Check with permit office. 

Vhf radio required: vhf radios are required in all vehicles moving loads over 10 feet 6 inches (3.2m) on the dempster highway(highway #5) 

Superloads: loads over 264,000 pounds(120,000 kg) must apply for a special permit for the move. 

Night moves: some loads may be allowed to move at night, pilot vehicles are required and loads may also be required to be accompanied by one or more yukon government carrier compliance vehicle. 

Loads over 10 feet 6 inches(3.2m) wide to 14 feet 5 inches(4.4m) may travel with escorts day or night on the following highways: 

  • The alaska highway from the bc/yukon border atkilometer 1008 to yukon/alaska border at beaver creek. 
  • The south klondike highway #2
  • The haines road #3
  • The north klondike highway
  • Thedempster highway from kilometer 0 to the yukon/nwt border 

Winter driving: tire chains must be carried for winter driving conditions from october 15 to april 15 

Bridges: no stopping, gear changing, sudden acceleration or braking on bridges. 

Farm equipment: farm equipment, vehicles or implements that are loaded on a truck or trailer are not exempt from over dimensional regulations and permit requirements. 

Bad weather: travel during reduced visibility and inclement conditions is not permitted. For road and weather conditions over dimensional loads are required to check the yukon website www.511yukon.ca for the latest conditions before starting out. 

Flagging: there is a “sight requirement” for oversize loads when flagging or when less lights required of 295 feet(90m). 

 

Escort vehicle requirements 

Two way communication must be maintained between all vehicles involved over dimensional load move. Reflective vest must be worn when outside escort vehicle while engaged in activity with respect to the operation of the over dimensional load. A vehicle, while engaged as an escort vehicle must not tow any trailer or other vehicle. The escort must not carry any load, that in any manner, obscures any lights or signs that is required to be equipped with. Escort vehicle must not exceed a registered gross vehicle weight of 13200 pounds(6000 kg) with two axles. Escort vehicles entering the yukon are required to obtain a permit in order to work there. Permit can be obtained at weigh scale. Escort vehicles are required to report to the scales in yukon and are required to show proof of insurance.  

 

Additional safety equipment: recommended(by other professional pilot operators) that safety glasses, steel toed boots and a handheld radio be carried. As well as maps, extra clothing, bedding, water, winter survival kit and a cell phone for emergencies.
